In 1998 Jim Halloran started a search for a quality ship in bottle to complement one received a few years earlier as a gift. He searched gift shops, trade shows and catalogs with no luck. The thought crossed his mind "I can't be the only one in the USA who enjoys these intricately created ship models?"
With that in mind he expanded his search to Europe where he found Jochen Binikowski, a talented craftsman and designer of these models in Hamburg, Germany. Following an exchange of emails, samples arrived in the USA. Shortly thereafter Jochen arrived for a visit. A bond was formed and an agreement was reached. Jim would be the USA distributor for Jochen Binikowski's ships in bottles, and thus Ships in Bottles was founded.
Now many years later, the relationship is going strong. Jim has sold thousands of models to satisfied individuals and organizations. In recent years he has expanded his line to include special small scale ship models also not found in the USA.
Ships in Bottles is located in Madison, Georgia, 60 miles east of Atlanta. It is still a small business managed by Jim and assisted by family, associates and sometimes students from Wesleyan College where Jim teaches entrepreneurship.
